Cable vibration induced by wind and ice shedding

címmel előadást tart a Pannon Egyetem Matematika Tanszék Könyvtárában (Veszprém, Egyetem utca 10., I épület, 3. emelet 314-es szoba)

Cables are suspended in several engineering applications including overhead transmission lines. Such cables are exposed to dynamic loads under severe icing conditions due to such phenomena as strong wind acting on iced cable or shedding of ice accumulated on the cable. The resulting high-amplitude cable vibration and excessive dynamic forces may cause severe damage to some elements of the transmission line. The equations of motion of an iced cable during wind-induced vibrations are derived; and the stresses developing in the cable and in the ice during such vibrations are determined using the finite element method. A numerical model was also developed to simulate cable vibration following ice shedding from the cable. The model is applicable to study different shedding processes including sudden ice shedding and ice shedding propagation; and it can simulate the resulting vibration of single cables or conductor bundles. Such simulations provide information about the vibration amplitude, and the forces acting on the cable and at the suspension during the vibration; and, thus, they predict cable rebound height, tension peak, and to what extent the clearance between conductors is reduced during vibration. The understanding of these phenomena is essential in order to reduce their destructive effects.
